University of Iowa offers many part-time, hourly student positions. These positions can be taken on or off-campus. Students can work 40 hours per weeks during the summer. Students are not required to register for summer courses in order to work part-time hours. Employers should be aware of Iowa’s rules for student employment. Students are limited to 20 hours of work per academic year by law. Students can only work for 40 hours during the Thanksgiving, winter, spring and summer vacations.

State law sets hourly work limits for students working at the University of Iowa. Students are allowed to work no more than twenty hours per week during the school-year and 40 hours during breaks. If a student works more than forty hours in one week, they will be required to pay overtime, and this is not covered by Work-Study dollars. Hourly work limits depend on how much Work-Study dollars the student receives each weekly.


According to University of Iowa's Handbook for New Students (Handbook for Students), students should not work more that 20 hours per week. This is a lot of time and students who work more may not be able to study well. Employers are welcome to post student job opportunities in Handshake provided that they follow the law.

Required Form I-9

For students, it might be a concern that the University of Iowa requires Form I-9 certification. These important documents can be used to confirm the identity of employees and determine whether they are employed on the campus. These forms are required in law and protect the university from fraudulent claims. If you are unsure about whether or not a student position requires Form I-9, you can always check with the school's human resources office.

If students are being paid for their work, they are required to fill out Form I-9 within 3 business days. Students must submit the form. They also need to provide the Student Employment Office with proof of identity, such as a passport, birth record, or SS Card. Employers are encouraged submit multiple applications for student employment. Interviews will occur in a confidential atmosphere.

Payroll biweekly

Employed by the University of Iowa, your paychecks are issued on a biweekly basis. Biweekly pay employees for work done within the last calendar month. Unless you have a semester job that requires you to work additional hours, your paycheck will be sent on the first week of the following week. Eligible pay adjustments are also included in biweekly pay schedules.
